Providing MNT for the Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes Population: What Does the Evidence Show?

The RDN is critical to the interdisciplinary care of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes and their families due to the vital role of nutrition in disease management and the RDN's unique ability to provide medical nutrition therapy. The limited evidence to inform the delivery of MNT, along with a variety of other barriers, makes working with this vulnerable population that consistently demonstrates the poorest glycemic control across the lifespan challenging for newly-credentialed and seasoned RDNs alike.

Based on findings from the Academy's Evidence Analysis Center's systematic review regarding delivering MNT in the care of pediatric type 1 diabetes, RDNs with significant practice experience working with this population will guide attendees through the complexities of diabetes management, exploring both challenges and opportunities in delivering nutrition care in collaboration with clients, families, and other healthcare team members.

Case-based learning developed from personal experiences will illustrate putting evidence into practice and actively engage attendees in problem-solving nutrition-related challenges, including tips and practice pearls to facilitate shared decision-making, enhance quality of life and improve outcomes.
