Nearly 1 million people in the US are living with Parkinson's disease (PD) and nearly 90,000 are diagnosed each year. For decades, the role of nutrition in PD has been largely defensive including managing side effects of disease progression and drug nutrient interactions. There is an emerging body of evidence that the clinical outcomes in PD may be modifiable with diet and particular food-related behaviors.
This session will touch on the multiple ways malnutrition and metabolic dysregulation contribute to neurodegeneration and the current evidence linking diet and PD outcomes over time. The Mediterranean, MIND and the Patient-Reported Outcomes in PD (PD-PRO) diets will be reviewed including specific strategies for implementation as we attempt to use diet as a disease-modification strategy.
