If RDNs working in ambulatory care organizations do not advocate for themselves as a critical member of the health care team other disciplines are prepared to provide nutrition services in the Value-Based Care payment models (VBC). The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid announced plans to have all Medicare beneficiaries and most Medicaid patients as part of a VBC program by the year 2030 to promote quality care, control costs and expand access to care.
Emerging trends in VBC and how it works are described. Kay Craven provides examples of RDNs advocating for a position on a team dedicated to improving patient outcomes, reducing costs and providing an exceptional experience for patients. Katie Eliot is well known for describing ways working interprofessionally will reduce burnout and promote the scope of practice for the RDN. She will provide innovative strategies to assist students, interns and practicing RDNs in developing the skills and competencies needed to be valued on the ambulatory care team.
