Traditionally, providers have given clients advice to change. However, many individuals who present for counseling are still ambivalent about change. Ambivalent clients may meet the provider’s solutions with reluctance or non-compliance . Motivational interviewing (MI) is a directive client-centered counseling style that is designed to help clients explore and resolve their ambivalence to increase clients’ motivation for change. MI helps clients move through the stages of change to the “action” stage where clients begin to make changes to their behavior. MI adheres to an empathetic style and is never confrontational. MI uses a guiding style to engage with clients, clarify their strengths and aspirations, awaken their own motivations for change, and promote autonomy of decision making.
